I posted about this The Dreaded Killer Jellyfish of Graphic Design Favors Poster before. Allan from Core77 just gave me the heads up that the poster is now available for purchase for a mere $20! Read about it over on Core77.
If you’ve been shopping, watching TV or surfing the web at all, you’ve undoubtedly noticed all of the companies taking their products and services green. While this is generally a good thing, we can’t help but notice some brands going about it in all the wrong ways: producing ...

BOOX, the modular storage system originally designed in 2006 by Alberto Basaglia and Natalia Rota Nodari, is being transformed by LEDs. The new BOOX LED integrates lighting in a unique way—inside the aluminum bars that compose the shelving’s frame. What’s interesting about this design is that it enables each single shelf to be illuminated. The capability to light up gives BOOX LED new opportunities for showing off whatever you keep inside the system. ...

‘information leak’ by richard evans, 2009
richard evans created this typographic artwork using laser-cut letters that appear to be flowing out of
a tap like water. the design was created to represent the information overload in today’s society and
as evans describes ‘(how) it over-flows into our lives’. the metaphor of water overflowing from a sink ...

We’ve heard a lot lately about the relationship between global warming and the ocean. An article in Thursday’s Journal of Science describes how aquatic dead zones — or hipoxic waters — create trouble for more than the organisms that live in the waters. In addition to their low levels of oxygen killing off marine life, they can also increase global warming. University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science oceanographer Dr. Lou Codispoti explains in his article how ...

Kapor Klein House model, Marcy Wong Donn Logan Architects
There is a fight going on in Berkeley, over the construction of a house for Mitch Kapor, the founder of Lotus and creator of Lotus 123, the program that made personal computers useful. Neighbours, architects and others call it "absurd" that the house should be called green, saying its 10,000 square feet is far too big. One neighbour complains that "green building begins with using 'just enough' and preserving what already exists. Clearly the idea of 'just enough' is not part of the design concept."
But how much is too much?... ...Currently making the rounds, and proof that you don't necessarily need to use your architecture degree exactly as intended, in Las Vegas this week, Bryan "The Cardstacker" Berg just overcome his previous Guinness record for largest house of cards ever assembled to set a new record. The former student of architecture, ...

When Christiane Lemieux of DwellStudio submitted this recipe in October, we thought it was a great idea for winter. Those of you who aren’t still watching the snow fall can take advantage of it as well. You can use whichever vegetables are in season and most flavorful, even if the recipe takes advantage of summer’s finest. Hearty soups are a great way to use up any surplus vegetables you have around and though I had every intention of pureeing the leftovers and freezing it, my husband ate it all so there were none! Vegetarians/vegans can substitute the chicken stock with a non-meat based alternative and just use toasted crostini rubbed with garlic, instead of parmesan. -...

America’s vehicles are about to get a little greener. This week, the White House is finalizing rules that will set the first national standard for controlling the country’s car and truck emissions. The new regulations aim to raise vehicles’ fuel economies to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, a 42 percent increase from the current average of 25 miles per gallon. ...
The deadline for M2L’s Genuine Design Competition has been extended to Monday, March 15.
Open to design students across the country, the competition calls on participants to create a video — up to four minutes long — in the form of a Public Service Announcement on the topic of genuine design and why furniture designers deserve the right to protect their work against unauthorized copies and counterfeits.

M2L will award $8,500 in scholarships to four chosen finalists and honor the winners at an event at M2L’s NYC showroom this spring. The winning videos will also be displayed in M2L’s showrooms in New York, DC and Boston and posted on the Genuine Design website.

Like with most big projects, the good comes with the bad. The news that the area around the base of Seattle's iconic Space Needle is set to get spruced up with a new $15 million museum, celebrating the work of glass artist Dale Chihuly, is good because it means more construction work, jobs for museum employees, additional visitors to the area. On the negative side, it means they're going to have to tear down the ...

Last Tuesday’s snow fall finally fully succumbed to this week’s warming trend. A brief walk around my property the other day revealed the presence of many, many daffodil buds sending their green arms of praise and golden heads of happiness up and out of the ground, rousing themselves from this winter’s protracted cold, ready for the spring throw-down to officially commence...

Hot off the press: Philadelphia-based Amuneal Mfg. has been selected as the Best in Show booth winner for GlobalShop 2010 by the editors of DDI Magazine.
Located in the Store Fixturing Show pavilion (Booth 3219), the booth is constructed of 1,000 hand-made flowers, whose petals were individually laser-cut from steel and then powder-coated and welded together on a 14-ft.-tall structure. Talk about some serious work for a display booth. ...

GlobalShop is filled to the brim with creativity. From booth display designs to products to just amazingly talented people – GlobalShop has it covered. But, of course there are always a few items that stand out above the rest.
I fell in love immediately with Ronis’s booth display (check out the cool dog), and upon closer inspection found a plethora of creative gems. There’s the desk with a comic book painted cover, the mannequin with a ridiculously long arm (perfect for hanging clothes!) and the eye glass holders carved out to represent Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson and one of my idols, John Lennon. ...

Walking into Crate & Barrel, Williams Sonoma, or even Anthropologie, you’d think that an adorable apron is just as essential to making a good meal as an understanding of baking soda verses baking powder. They’re always displayed in fancy baking stores alongside the cash rack (primed and ready for impulse buys), as bright and cheery as a Doris Day movie. I, for one, love the bright pink apron that I wear on busy baking days, but can’t recall ever seeing anyone else (outside the movies) wearing an apron while they bustle around the kitchen. So how about it, readers? Is everyone wearing a cute apron while cooking or entertaining, or am I just watching too much Mad Men? — Katie D. ...

In case you hadn't heard, there's a bit of a design argument going on in Glasgow, Scotland right now. The issue is over the £95,000 of public funds spent on a new logo for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games (a very Olympic-like, multi-sport event that happens every four years in different cities across the world). While everyone initially thought the logo, which was designed by the firm ...

Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine; director: Legs; prod co: Rokkit
Directing team Legs channels the fashionable shamanic vibe in this video for Florence and the Machine's Dog Days Are Over...
"Florence is the shamanic leader of a surreal orchestra where spiritual elation explodes into smokey psychedelic anarchy," says Legs. "Each musical element of the song is personified by a group of colourful characters that combine 60s girl groups, Hinduism, gospel choirs, drum circles, paganism and pyrotechnics. Florence is a painted primal force of nature that whips a religious experience into a riot."...

Road Cones can be a pain sometimes, for the driver a safety hazard and for the guy who has to place them on the road, a back breaking job. Not many must have thought of redesigning this thang, but innovation is really called for. Interim let’s look at the Air Cone Concept; it’s this flattened balloon strip that you lay on the road. Inflating it causes Air Cones to pop up, but care has been taken to ensure a sturdy design. Only hope that crazy kids with pins in hand don’t got popping it just for fun...

Quadratic much? At the intersection between two curves comes this stool right here. Not to be kicked around all too much! It’s called the “f(x) stool” it’s the interconnection. It’s the birch, the plywood, and the adjustability in mathematics. As the curves get further away from one another, the seat gets wider, but you might feel a bit more nervous, as the support reduces...
I didn’t ratchet my way into writing this article, I just hammered it out. But that’s not what Itay Laniado is all about. Itay Laniado designed this magnificent set of material, metal, and wood. It’s a ladder that’s got nothing holding it together but a single ratchet. And what’s best about that? Collapsibility. Lots and lots of collapsibility that means you can jam this ladder in just about any crack or nook. ...
